Architecture Career Path


Following are the career paths in architecture. However, positions in the firm vary according to the size of the firm.

Administrative:

Offering administrative services and office management are included in this category. Responsibilities include answering phones, scheduling, filing, ordering and running the office smoothly. Administrative careers require no knowledge in architecture. It is good for people who are interested in architecture but do not have an architecture background.

Draftsperson:

Usually there is a junior draftsman and senior draftsman, who are distinguished according to their experience and accountability. A draftsperson is responsible for drafting the plan of project as per the instructions of the project architect or project manager. A draftsman should possess a degree in architecture, and also have a good knowledge of computer aided design (CAD).

Job captain:

Job captain is responsible for organizing and working on the plans for a project. He also manages and revises the plans if necessary and guides the working staff accordingly. A job captain should have a bachelor's degree in architecture. A license is not necessary, however he should have enough experience.

Project manager:

Project manager is responsible for managing daily activities, coordinating project work and staff, and scheduling of jobs. This career also requires a bachelor's degree in architecture and experience in the architecture field.

Project architect:

A project architect manages and monitors a project. Responsibilities of a project architect include designing and coordinating drawings details, consulting, coordinating, making decisions about issues. The project architect must have a bachelor's degree in architecture and experience in the architecture field, along with a license from the state of employment.

Principal or partner:

Principal or partner is the one who runs the company. Some companies have a design principal and business partner. Principal or partner is responsible for designing, administration, business as well as strategic planning, marketing, client contact and meetings, and project scheduling.
