Disciplines in Engineering

In engineering, there are more than 25 disciplines. With the development of technology and science, new disciplines will also emerge in the coming years. However, many disciplines in engineering are interdependent or overlapped. Here are some of the basic and common engineering disciplines:

Electrical engineering:

Electrical engineers work on various things including circuitry, power systems and transmission, industrial robotics, microprocessors, communication and digital broadcasting. Electrical engineers may also be involved in the manufacturing of circuit boards, broadcast systems as well as electric utility services. They also are part of projects like radar and navigation systems, machinery controls, wiring in houses, aircraft, automobiles and electric motors.

Software engineering:

Software engineers are responsible for creating programs for various purposes that can be used on different platforms like Windows, UNIX or Macintosh. They are also known as programmers. Web engineers are basically programmers who create applications, particularly for the Web.

Experts working in the networking field are responsible for establishing and maintaining networks, often within companies as well as government offices. They are responsible for secure and reliable networks.

Mechanical engineering:

Mechanical engineers are responsible for designing, manufacturing or running engines, robots, pipelines, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and many other mechanical tools. They are also employed in the power industry to work on power generating equipments including electric generators, steam as well as gas turbines and internal combustion engines.

Work of mechanical engineers varies according to their industry and functional area. Some specific fields in mechanical engineering are applied mechanics, manufacturing, computer-aided design (CAD), pressure vessels, energy systems, broilers, piping, heating, and refrigeration.

Chemical engineering:

Chemical engineers are responsible for the creation and use of chemicals by applying principles of chemistry and engineering. Chemical engineers work in different industries and apply the principles of chemistry, mathematics, physics, electrical as well as mechanical engineering. Most chemical engineers are specialized in a particular area including pollution control, polymerization, oxidation, production of fertilizers and pesticides, automotive plastics, chlorine bleach and more.

Environmental engineering:

Environmental engineers invent procedures to solve difficulties regarding the environment. Environmental engineers apply the principles of biology and chemistry to control air and water pollution, waste disposal methods and public health concerns.
