Hotel Management Careers

Hotel management is becoming an important aspect of the hospitality and tourism industry. In the past, most of the hotels hired their hotel managers from front desk, sales and housekeeping positions.

Such people did not have any formal education about hotel management. However nowadays, personnel with a hotel and restaurant management degree are preferred by the employers. Also, internships as well as part-time jobs will help a great deal in order to grab hotel management career positions.

Mostly, graduates from hotel or restaurant management are chosen for hotel management job positions. They start their career in hotel management as trainee assistant managers and then advance in their career very fast as compared to others. There are also leadership training programs that encourage graduates to participate in order to enhance their leadership or managerial skill. Some hotels appoint experienced people for high level jobs as they don't need any training.

Hotel managers perform various activities including monitoring and coordinating various departments of the hotel. So it is necessary that the most senior general manager should have a thorough understanding of each department of the hotel.

In order to know about each department of the hotel, you should work in every department for a short period of time.

There are various leadership development programs which are organized by hotel chains like Hilton Hotels. In this hotel chain, there is a program called Hilton's Leadership-in-Training program which rotates a trainee in 10-12 hotels with a 10 months span. The goal of this training program is to make an employee familiar with every department of the establishment, so that it will be easy for them to handle and coordinate all these departments in the future.
