Medical Scientists

In the career as medical scientist the main job includes lab research, clinical investigation, technical writing, drug application review and related activities. They study biological systems to understand the causes of disease and other health problems. They develop treatments and techniques in design research tools that have medical applications.They usually work in applied research or product development. They use knowledge gained from basic research to develop new drugs and medical treatments.

In the career as medical scientist, they perform different tasks depending on their specialties. Some medical scientists specialize in epidemiology. This branch of medical science involves investigation and studies the causes of disease and means to prevent it. Epidemiologists are further divided into two groups like clinical and research.

Generally, Epidemiologists study different illnesses, mostly infectious diseases such as cholera or influenza. Clinical epidemiologists work in consulting at hospitals, informing the medical staff about infectious breakouts and providing solutions over it. Some of them are also physicians. However, they also required to develop standards and guidelines for treatment and control of infectious diseases.

There are also research epidemiologists who conduct research to control infectious diseases. Many of them work on illnesses that affect the body, such as AIDS or typhus, while others study diseases related to brain, lungs, or digestive track.

Qualifications:-
A Ph.D. is a basic qualification needed to research basic life processes or particular medical problems and to study the results of experiments. Students planning a medical career as medical scientist should have a bachelor's degree in biological science. Along with it some courses in chemistry and biology, and knowledge of mathematics, engineering, physics, and computer science is also beneficial. They can even have advanced degrees in specialties such as cytology, bioinformatics, genomics, and pathology.

To become an epidemiologist the education needed is a master's degree from a school of public health. Some of these scientists job need a Ph.D. or medical degree, depending on the type of work. Epidemiologists working in hospitals and health care centers need a medical degree with a specific training in infectious diseases. Other specialties include occupational epidemiology, infection processes, infection control precautions, surveillance method, and outbreak investigation.

  • Medical scientists need to work independently or in groups, so they should have good oral and written communication skills.
  • The medical technologists, especially in consulting and administrative work should have strong communication skills so that they can give instructions and advice to physicians and other health care professionals.

In the career as medical scientist, they mostly have to work independently in private industry, university, or government labs, especially doing a research work. They also work in colleges, universities, hospitals, and nonprofit medical research organizations and the work is typically to grant proposals to get funds for their projects. Most of them spend their time in clinics and hospitals. They work for regular hours in offices or labs. On occasions, the epidemiologists may be required to travel to meetings or for medical investigations.

The salary also depends on the type of work, employer, and the experience. The industries that provide good salary for a medical scientist job are pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing industries. The salary provided to a medicine scientist by surgical hospitals, colleges and universities is also good.

In the career as medical scientist, the entry-level job is to assist the senior scientists. Medical technologists with experience can work independently, with large budgets. Others can move to managerial positions and become natural science managers. However those who take managerial positions have to plan and prepare the budgets and schedules.
