Advertising Sales Agents is rewarding career option. These agents are termed as advertising sales representatives or account executives. Sales advertising includes periodicals, newspapers, radio, television, telephone directories, websites, outdoor advertising, direct mail, etc.

Nature of the Work
Advertising sales agents play an important role in the process of business management. The success of business is based upon the way a product is marketed. Therefore, an advertising sales agent is in great demand. The arrival of various companies has broadened the employment opportunities to expert professionals.

Most of the advertising sales agents work in the information sectors, generally for media firms comprising of radio and television broadcasters, internet and print publishers, and cable program distributors. Every regionally based firm needs the help of two types of advertising sales agent one to deal with local clients and other to seek for advertising from national advertisers.

Radio, television, and print publications hire local sales agents who are accountable for sales in an immediate territory. Some companies known as media delegates firms sell advertising space and time for media proprietor at the national level with a team of advertising sales agents.

Advertising sales agents who are employed in media representation at advertising agencies are known as media buyers. These agents buy advertising space for their clients wishing to organize national advertising campaigns. When a radio station, television broadcaster, online or print publisher is working with media representing company, the media firm generally hires national sales managers to facilitates and coordinate efforts with media representative.

Local sales mangers are called inside sales agents or outside sales agents. Outside sales agents invite clients and examine their places of business. They may or may not have an appointment to arrive at the workplace. These sales agents lay emphasis upon attaining new accounts as it is the part of his/her job. Sales agents may need to travel as per the company's need. They may spend ample amount of time in traveling and visiting prospective clients and current advertisers.

On the other hand, Inside Sales Agents work on their employer's premises. They cope with sales for customers who contact the firm in-person or by telephone to inquire about advertising. Before participating in the meeting with clients, an advertising sales agent has to collect the important information including background information, client's products, prospective customers, current customers, and geographic area of the targeted market.

Consequently, sales agents meet clients to discuss how specific genres of advertising facilitate to promote client's products or service more efficiently. If clients desire to precede the deal, an advertising sales agent creates an advertising proposal to present clients. This involves deciding the advertising standard to be used, equipping clients with cost estimates for the proposal, and preparing sample advertisement.

Work Environment
Sometimes, selling can become stressful work due to job security and income depends upon the ability of an agent to expand and maintain customers. Generally, companies deposit monthly sales quotas and lay substantial stress on advertising sales agents to fulfill those quotas. Thus, the job of sales agent seems lucrative but it caries a little amount of pressure.

Educational Qualifications
Some organizations prefer candidates with a degree along with interpersonal skills. However, smaller companies employ individuals with high school degree. Candidates who have completed courses in leadership, marketing, business, communication, and advertising are preferred.

Candidates who have a proof that he/she has records of successfully selling various products, for such candidates, high school degree is enough to get a good job. A sales position requires meeting with target clients, discuss with staff members, and handle a team. Therefore, candidates who have good communication skills are preferred.

Organize and deliver sales presentations to existing and new customers in order to sell new advertising programs, and to protect and increase existing advertising. An advertising sales agent has to carry out various responsibilities. Some of these responsibilities are given below.

  • Describe customers how to specific kind of advertising will facilitate to promote their products/services successfully
  • Keep account bases whilst creating new accounts
  • Deliver illustration or advertising proofs to consumer for approval
  • Make contracts for advertising work and accumulate payment dues
  • Contact prospective clients to offer various advertising services
  • Equip clients with costs estimates of advertising services/products
  • Suggest proper formats and sizes for advertising depending on the medium used
  • Notify customers of available options for advertisement work and equip them with samples
  • Attain and study information about client's services, products, problems, needs, advertising history, and business practices to offer efficient sale presentations and accurate product support
  • Interact with company officials, advertising agencies, and sales departments to create and develop promotional plans
  • Prepare sales literature, sales contracts, media kits, and promotional plans using various computer applications
  • Collect all related material for bid processes, contract approval and coordinate bidding
