Probation Officers Career

In the probation officers career, probation officers need to supervise the people who are on probation period. The criminals or offenders most of the times are kept on probation instead of keeping them in prison or jails. These criminals must be monitored to prevent them from committing other crimes. Thus, the career as probation officers is one of the most challenging jobs as they need to monitor the offenders and make them aware of the effects of crime. They also conduct programs and counseling sessions to convert these offenders into a responsible citizen. This job of probation officers is also risky as they deal with different kinds of criminals who may be dangerous to their lives.

Tasks:-
In the probation officers career, the probation officers carry out different tasks. They are as follows:-

  • Probation officers interact and interview offenders, police, and prison colleagues, or offenders' relatives.
  • Provide pre-sentence reports to the judges and magistrates which help the court to get detailed information about the offenders.
  • Design and develop programs and counseling sessions for the offenders to avoid another crime and convert offenders into a responsible citizen.
  • Supervise the offenders and prepare reports based on the improvement.
  • Study the history of the offenders and try to find the reason behind conducting crimes.
  • Manage approved premises where the offenders are not kept in prisons but are kept in a safe place where they are only monitored by probation officers.

Qualification:-
In the probation officers career, the basic qualification needed for most of the probation officers job is a bachelor's degree. They can be a graduate in criminal justice, psychology, social work, or any other related subjects. Some of the employers may also need bachelor's degree with some years of experience in social work, probation, parole, criminal investigations, abuse treatment, or counseling. A master's degree is necessary for senior positions.

  • Good interpersonal skills as they need to communicate effectively with different kinds of offenders.
  • Good written skills as they also prepare reports after studying the entire case.

In the probation officers career, they spend most of the time in courts. They have to even travel extensively to meet the offenders or their family members and neighborhood. They study the entire case of the offenders and monitor them. Most of the time probation officers spend their time in jails, prisons, or probation agencies. The probation officers have to work for longer hours and at times for continuous days with the offenders till the case gets resolved.

The salary is best for the chief probation officer who is the head of all the probation officers.

In the probation officers career, the promotion for probation officers depends on the years of experience and the performance based on different types of cases they have handled. The candidates with bachelor's degree in law or criminal justice get entry-level jobs like assistant probation officers. With years of experience they become chief probation officers or supervisors. The candidates with master's degree in criminal justice, psychology, or social work are eligible for most of the senior positions.

The probation officers career is expected to have great demand in coming years. The crimes are increasing, and so are the criminals. The court does not put each and every criminal in jails or prisons but on probation period. The need for counseling these offenders and supervise them so that they do not create new crimes will also arise. Thus, the demand for probation officers will also increase to maintain peace throughout the world and in making these offenders good citizens of the society.

However, it also depends on the type of crime done by criminals as the court may ask them to directly be a part of prison. Thus, if the court gives their final verdict on not keeping the offenders on a probation period, it may affect the probation officers job.
