A Peer Specialist is a person who has recovered from mental disorder, drug abuse or alcohol and is willing to self-identify as a peer and provide support to other individuals with problems he or she has initially suffered. Since the incumbent has already experienced what the other person is going through, he or she is in a better position to recognize, empathize, and treat the afflicted.
