How many times a day you surprise yourself by saying "it's not fair!'? If not so many times, you are just a lucky person. Because there are people in this world who see their lives turned upside down since nowadays you don't necessarily have to earn a lot of money in order to be sued like a billionaire and being expected to pay some money you couldn't gather not even in more than one life. If you don't like injustice and you feel like setting things straight, maybe you should consider a career as an attorney. There are quite many positions on the job market, with impressive financial compensations. I know you like the possibility, but you should know that things are not as easy to get as they might seem on a first view. It takes a lot of time and effort to become an attorney. I mean a good attorney, because incomes are directly proportional with your value in a law court. Without good results, you can't expect for many clients and nor for a lot of money.
Education
A bachelor's degree is mandatory for those starting to work as an attorney and this is why many law students find themselves in the situation of working during their studies. Luckily, there are special part time and night divisions for those who are interested to practice and attend classes at the same time. After graduation, things are not finalized yet because there is a written bar examination that needs to be passed and depending on state, federal courts can establish their own rules for admitting new lawyers.
And it's not everything about how much law theories you know. You also must have interpersonal and communicational skills, knowledge of foreign languages, ability of speaking in public, notions about philosophy, economics, history, math and computers. Otherwise said, the more things you know and the bigger your general culture is, the more chances you have to succeed in doing this.
Specializations
The law system is extremely difficult to cover. There are so many laws to be passed and so many situations in which one could need an attorney that, as a consequence, lawyers have their specializations to choose for. It's better to be an expert in a specific section of law than to have a sort of idea about all the laws in the code. Just to name a few of these specializations: family law, criminal law, civil law, environmental law, international law, personal injury law, probate law, bankruptcy law and the list can go on. I would also mention that at the present moment a new field tends to develop extremely well. It's the intellectual property law, which regards protecting copyrights, artwork, product designs, computer programs or patents.
There are the lawyers working in specialized firms, the lawyers of the federal court, military lawyers and prosecution lawyers. There are lawyers specialized in obtaining settlements for avoiding lawsuits and lawyers specially trained for pleading in courts. In this last situation, an attorney should have a lot of skills to help him face the continuously changing environment from inside a law court.
