Civil Service Jobs


The term civil service refers to the body of civilian employees that work for the government or for public agencies, other than military, which are particularly excluded. Civil servants, also known as public servants, are employees of the state that help different governmental departments effectively communicate their strategies and messages and offer their services to the citizens of a state. They can not only work at a federal level, in the ministry headquarters or in national agencies, but also on a regional setting or municipal setting.

The civil services include three types of working locations: departments, non-departmental government bodies, or NDPB, and agencies. There are also international career opportunities for public servants, in international organizations. They aren't employees per se of any national government, and they have to follow the organization's internal regulations. This is the case of the UN International Civil Service Commission for example, a great career opportunity for experts that want to work in a civil service position.

Civil services at different regional levels usually have independence in administrating their own staff. Vacant positions can often appear at state or local level, and each need experts in various fields of public activity. Employees with different educational background, training and experience can apply for a civil service job, since state and local administration all have to offer services for specific public operations and situations.

Employment Conditions in Civil Service Jobs

Civil service positions are highly sought after especially because of the reliability of the position (fluctuations in the state employments apparatus are not as often as in the private sector), and because of the financial, health and retirement benefits they offer. Employees of the state generally have a better salary rate than those working for private companies and this is explained by the generous benefits that are added to the wages (the situation varies depending on the state or country).

Types of Civil Service Jobs

Depending on the nature of the job, different professionals or different levels of workers can obtain a position as public servants. Clerks with basic office administrative abilities or IT experts in implementing business strategies have a place in the public administration of a state or a town. Many occupations are, in fact, exclusively or in big proportions, the prerogative of governmental agencies - teachers for example, work almost entirely in the public sector, and also librarians or public safety professionals. Civil servants occupy positions in the entire service structure of a state, starting with the state departments and ending with local projects and offices. They all need expert contribution in improving the public policies and increasing the quality of life.

Examples of jobs in the civil service sector are: administrative officers, head of education, finance director, analyst in all domains, casework officer, loan collection supervisor, secretarial administrator, trainee procurement executive, senior manager, project manager, interface and framework developer, business process analyst, field ecologist or executive director of railway markets.
