If you want to have one of the many IT jobs, first of all, you will need to graduate an IT college/university, or something related to computer science. The jobs in IT are popular, but not every one can do them. You need to learn everything you can about computers, complicated programs, how to create software and everything related to that. You need to have good grades and be determined, with an analytical mind and being able to discover and solve issues and security breaches as soon as you find any.

You studied a lot, you practiced a lot, you know a lot of things about computers, databases, various operating systems, you even got a diploma and now you want to get hired as a system programmer. But do you have any idea of what you need to do as a system programmer? Here you can find a short presentation of the duties:

- taking care of the hardware, software tools, processes: installation, configuration, maintenance and troubleshooting

- creating, developing, implementing and integrating products and programs for and on UNIX platforms

- demonstration and communication of technical concepts in an effective way

- contacting the clients or the vendors in order to solve any major problems they might have with the machines

- observing the performance of the mainframe

- inspecting the existing tools and creating others in order to improve productivity

- keeping the standards of the quality

- assuring the backup of the data

- re-architect and re-engineer the current environment, if needed or requested

- setting the users, shut-down procedures and protocol

Because this job is very complex, what follows are the basic skills that will get you at least to the interview. If you possess additional skills which are not on this list, it's even better for you:

- Strong knowledge of network protocol

- Strong analytical thinking

- Very good skills in using the operating system, and third party applications if required

- Good knowledge of other operating systems, as installation

- Very strong verbal and written communication skills

- High adaptability to either team work or individual work

- Time management skills

- Ability to meet deadlines while handling more tasks

- Good customer relation skills

Some companies, especially the really big ones, offer a good base salary up to $110,000 in American currency - per year-, bonuses, help to relocate (in case the best candidate lives far away, but not by buying a house) and they also offer really good benefits. Keep in mind that the lowest base salaries for this position will not go below $85,000.
