Offshore Jobs

Offshore jobs are very demanding. You have to stay weeks in a row on an industrial see platform and perform physical work 8 to 10 hours a day. But regardless of the tough conditions, there are plenty of people that find this working schedule very attractive. First of all, offshore jobs are very well-paid and they are more flexible than other jobs, given the extent of off work time that follows the weeks of labor. But offshore jobs aren't only jobs in the oil industry, on rigs, but jobs on ships or, even better, on cruise ships. It becomes obvious why someone would want to spend so much time out on the ocean. Terrific destinations and exquisite board experience could turn any work into a piece of cake.

The Petroleum Offshore Industry

The offshore job concept usually refers to working in the petroleum industry. This field of activity offers the biggest number of job vacancies and career opportunities in domains of expertise. It is also the most sought for type of offshore job, because of the financial compensation. Offshore positions require serious qualifications. You can't just use mere physical force in order to be able to do the job. Science and engineering graduates of superior forms of education are the most likely to be selected for a job in this field. People with only a bachelor's degree have the chance to complete vocational certificate courses in order to obtain the proper qualifications for working on a rig. But not only science and engineer experts have a place on an oil platform, information technology experts and medical professionals as well as catering staff are also sought for.

From the offshore oil workers, the drillers are the ones responsible with the actual drilling of the petroleum from the ground. They are also the decision makers and supervisors of the rest of the crew related to safety procedures. They take care of the equipment and perform a number of other administrative tasks. The offshore drillers are assisted by mechanics and electricians in maintaining the equipment and performing the necessary repairs.

Engineers are the minds behind the drilling action. They study and design the drilling operations and make sure that they are performed accordingly. They are responsible for the technical aspects of the whole project. Examples of engineer offshore jobs are chief engineer or subsea engineer.

Medical and catering staffs are represented by secondary employees that don't actually participate in the offshore work. That doesn't mean that their presence is dispensable. Such positions are suitable for people with other qualifications than that in the petroleum industry that still want to be on a petroleum rig.

As any offshore vessel, the oil rigs need to have a captain. It is not necessary for the captain to have any experience in the field, since his main task is that of navigating the vessel and overseeing and ensuring safety and discipline in the offshore unit. He is in charge with all the marine aspects of the job, like any other captain on a passenger ship or a cruise ship.
