What are public sector jobs?
The public sector, also known as the state sector, is designated to handle the production, delivery and distribution of public goods or services to citizens of a city, region or country. Those who apply for public sector jobs have the opportunity to choose from several areas such as education, public safety, national defense, urban administration, health care and many others.
Public sector jobs versus private sector jobs
As previously mentioned, public sector jobs are provided by the government while any entrepreneur who owns a business can provide private sector jobs. The main purpose of public sector jobs is to provide high quality products and services to the citizens. On the other hand, the main purpose of the private sector is to make a profit.
Regarding the benefits offered to the employees, public sector jobs are more secure, meaning they offer you the chance of a lifetime employment. In addition, compensation packages are more appealing rather than in the private sector. Employees usually receive holiday bonuses, life and health insurance, paid sick days and vacations. Working conditions are also better in the public sector. Employees have a fixed schedule, usually from 9 am to 5 pm, from Monday to Friday. They are not usually required to stay overtime. Working within the public sector can turn out to be a very rewarding and challenging experience.
Getting a job in the public sector
Not everyone can work in the public sector. Most of jobs descriptions include strict requirements. First, only those who are residents of that country can work in the public sector. Moreover, they must have a clean criminal record and a clean employment history as well. Before applying for a job in the public sector, you must decide in which area you would like to perform.
The next step you need to consider is learning as much as you can about the employment conditions and requirements and make sure your studies and competences are a match. If further license or qualifications are needed, complete all prerequisites. Create a resume and a cover letter and send them to the institution you are interested in.
What public sector jobs can you apply to?
As already stated, there are many jobs you can choose from if you want to work in the public sector. If you are interested in civil service, you can apply for a job within the Foreign and commonwealth Office, Minister of Defense or Department for work and pensions. For those who want to work in the emergency services area can apply for a job at the ambulance service, fire brigade or police force. There are, of course, teaching jobs, health care jobs and business administration or local council jobs.
