Oh! The infamous retail field of work! Consumers really need the personnel working in retail sales. This personnel is needed to arrange the goods in the shop, to help the clients choose the right products by offering as much information as possible, to keep the shopping area clean and maybe more.
The retail job can be in a fashion store, in a general store, electronics, furniture and interior design stores or in a supermarket. In most of these places, it is pretty easy to get hired, even without experience. Like mentioned before, these shops are in great need of personnel, because the truth is that they do not have enough people. Have you ever wondered why the clerk you asked for a product, go and check personally if that product is still available? Well, now you know: they are short of personnel.
Usually, the supermarkets are short of personnel, and as a consequence, the people working there are either working longer, tiring shifts, or more with less time to rest. It may not be true for all of them; however there have been studies - conducted in the United States - which have shown these results. So as a young adult in search for a job, you could try and get hired there. And do not think of it as just a job, because it can turn into a national career, with the right patience.
In retail, you have the advantage that you can work part-time or full-time, and you might even get to choose your working hours. The fashion stores might be the second best choice to work in retail, especially if you are a girl, or if you want to pursue a career related to fashion. There are great things that you can learn or, if the store is really popular among rich people, you can get to know them a little bit and who knows, even get important connections. Let's not forget that these sales girls (personnel) get discounts when buying from the store they are working at, they are the first to know about the upcoming sales and can get their hands on the best products.
Electronics, furniture and interior design stores might have a similar atmosphere as a fashion store, but the frequency of clients will be far less. Concerning the stress involved in these retail shops, it is just as much as in a fashion store, but less than in a general store or supermarket.
The personnel require certain skills to be able to work in such environments: ability to sell (themselves first), and then ability to understand the clients' shopping requirements (some need help, some not really, some not at all), their need for the items sold, great communication skills and, nevertheless, the ability to work in a team.
Many really like working in a retail store because they are organized and, by taking care of a store and its needs, makes them feel stronger and in control of the situation. Then, there are some of the benefits mentioned above and the possibility of a career in the field is one to be considered.
