Main work of mail clerk is to deliver and sort the mails that come to business offices to the different departments of the company. Mail clerks work for insurance companies, government agencies, advertising agencies, schools, mail order firms and in business firms that receives or sends a deal of mail. They sort the piles of letters, packages and other mail into a large rolling bin and then deliver the mail to all parts of the building following a systemized route.
They may collect the outgoing mail at the same time from the departments. Memorandums and mails from one department to another are also carried by the mail clerks. If the reputed company has offices in more than one building then delivery of mails is done from building to building.

Mail clerk sort, pick-up and delivery all mail accurately and according to employee and the type such as bills, returned letters, orders, adjustments and payments. They also re-address the mail with incomplete or incorrect address, which are undeliverable. Mail clerks operate the postage machine and meter to prepare bulk mailings.
They work with the maintenance department and assure the items due to their need that is transporting by car or truck. Delivery of bank deposits to designate off campus locations is also done by mail clerk. They do other duties assigned by director of custodian and purchasing of public records. Other works like telephoning in mailroom, to send faxes, receive faxes electronically using right fax, use of equipment and supplies in a cost efficient manner, to train new employees to the policies and procedures at client site etc.
