Artistic director is responsible for overseeing the artistic designs of print materials, television, film commercials and advertisement. They are responsible for the quality of finished product. If the print of ad comes back with imperfection, then the art director is responsible for retouching it. He or she chooses a photographer, models, an illustrator and other necessary props for an advertisement. Ad director may take decisions on an advertising concept with copywriter. They determine overall look of ad. The area, where the artistic director works is known as bull pen where the artistic director supervises a team of artists.

They decide the size or range of photographs and illustrations for perfection on the typeface. Then they run the copy through computer programs to create the pages as in print. The artistic director creates rough layout of the ad using computer. It helps to understand makeup of copy that font, color and over all look of picture. First, client sees this layout and decides to approve or not.
