Chemist Jobs

Chemists are specialists and scientists that work with chemical materials in order to study, modify and experiment with the composition of matter and its qualities, such as density or acidity. They make measurements and combine elements in order to obtain new chemical substances and study their properties. Although this is generally a scientific endeavor with theoretical results, chemists have a lot to do with more practical aspects of our life too. They are the brains that create artificial substances such as drugs; they modify food and experiment with different substances in order to obtain new materials and processes in engineering or industry. They help develop new products, cosmetics or even energy and pollution solutions in order to improve the quality of our lives.

Employment Opportunities for Chemists

Chemistry job opportunities can mostly be found in academic institutions and require extensive studies and research abilities. These are jobs for expert chemists with scientific careers and it is not an easy task to find vacancies in this area and to satisfy the educational and experience demands of the position. The jobs can be strictly as researcher or as chemistry teacher at different school levels. But apart from the academic institutions, chemists also have the opportunity to work in more practical sectors such as industry, chemical industry or pharmaceutical industry, or in government laboratories.

Chemists get to study and experiment new ideas about practical aspects of our lives and they can have jobs such as material scientists, food science technicians, environmental and health science technicians, chemical engineers or soil and plant scientists. All these occupations have direct consequences on our daily practices and habits in the society, starting with the food we eat and ending with the medicine that we use and with the fabric of our clothes. More important fields where chemistry studies are playing a significant role are forensic science, petrochemistry, nuclear chemistry or molecular chemistry.

Types of Chemist Jobs

More specifically, chemists can work in different institutions as specialists in one or more chemistry branches. They can be analytical chemists that study the chemical composition and structure of matter using experiments (this is the most generic type of chemist and this kind of activity is necessary in all other types of chemistry jobs). Biochemists study chemical reactions and interaction in living organisms and can be employees of medical and pharmaceutical laboratories. Inorganic chemists research the atomic and molecular structure of inorganic matter, which can be of used in creating and improving materials used by our society in all domains of activity and at all levels of our life.

Medicinal chemists are probably the most sought for type of chemists. They work with pharmaceutical companies in order to improve existing drugs and develop new ones. The employment opportunities in this field are great, and the compensation is consistent. Physical chemists are another important type of chemists, that research the energetic and dynamics of chemical systems. Their work is important in different industrial areas. There are also theoretical chemistry researchers that deploy their study without practical application, using mathematics and physics.
