We all enjoy eating. We can not live without food but when we eat we are doing more than preserving our existence. Some of them have made cooking as their career so that they can eat while they cook, and thus enjoy their favorite meals. Hence, they find it as a fun, spontaneous, creative and exciting job. It's all about harmony and visual art while cooking. They are the ones to prepare, to cook and to season all sorts of foods in restaurants or other various establishments for food services. And just to understand that it's not easy at all to do this, I should mention that one can not become a cook without a special training and a considerable time spend in practice.
Job description
There are not too many things to say about a cook. We've already established where he works and what he does. But the conditions vary according to the restaurant. The more respectable the restaurant is, the better are the conditions for both the cook and the customers. A kitchen should have modern equipments, should be air conditioned and should bear all sorts of grills, ovens, pots and a serious provision of foods and ingredients. There are a lot of people working there, forming a team of helpers, under the supervising of a head cook or a chef. It's always a lot of noise, a lot of movement, orders; it is an agitated environment. At some specific moments, considered rush hours, one should work at a fast speed and under a considerable pressure. Another aspect regarding the stateliness of the restaurant is that a small one will have a rather constant menu, with not so difficult meals and orders, while a larger one might constantly change menus and come with delicate and difficult to prepare dishes.
Studies
Yes, don't be surprised, but even to become a cook there are some studies required. You can try your luck and go to an interview only with your high school diploma and the talent of convincing your employer to hire you and let you benefit from the training called "on the job". But if you have finished a vocational school, a technical school, a few years of college, chances are you could have followed a specific cooking course or program to help you apply for a job. A specialization course can last between two months to two years. After you get a job, you should start gathering experience. And if you don't have the right qualification in order to get hired as a cook, you might as well try to obtain a position of kitchen helper or even dishwasher. In time, you could impress someone from there and make him/her give you a chance.
Skills
All you need is to be passionate. The sense of smell and taste are also very important just like the qualities of being neat, health and clean, with a good thinking and the ability of staying under your budget when ordering ingredients. Also, being hard working and patient is important because there is no other way to get promoted from a dishwasher to a chef. And for those who are really ambitious there is another possibility of opening their cooking schools. And when you have some talent that you are willing to use, you might as well earn a lot of money and enjoy working.
