To become a nurse, one needs a nursing license and some psychology training. It is not an easy job at all; it's tiring and many times frustrating. However, being a nurse is also very rewarding from an emotional point of view. Nurses get to help many people, and in return these people make the nurses feel like they are a part of their family. So if you have the calling and the necessary skills, it could be a good job for you.
First of all, a nurse needs to be emotionally stable. They have many duties to take care, such as: feeding the patients, preparing meals for them, helping them getting dressed, ensure they get their needed physical activity; organize all kinds of indoor and outdoor activities for the patients.
Nurses help the patients with anything they cannot do on their own, even with the elementary tasks. Nurses work at all kinds of medical facilities, and even at mental hospitals.
A nurse needs to have good knowledge of the medical practices and health care and even computer knowledge. They have to be able to answer phones and emails, and talk with the patient's families if something needs to be discussed. Also, the nurses have to be empathetic and listen to the patients' problems and concerns.
As a nurse, you have to have a calm personality, not to get angry easily, and have good communication abilities as you will be around patients and the rest of the personnel all day. Sometimes, nurses have to provide help for the doctors if needed, in or out of the surgery room. They are the ones that prepare the patients for the surgery, and also the medical tools that are needed for the surgery.
The nurses take care of the patients, and even help other nurses with their patients - like giving medicine to the patients or taking their vital signs, checking their fever and many other similar activities.
Nurses are considered to be a very significant part of the health care industry, and without them the doctors would not be able to fulfill all their duties on time. It is a stressful job that may require working overtime and long hour shifts - maybe even at night. If a nurse is very good at her job, and has worked in the facility for a long period of time, she can become a head nurse or a nurse manager. With that, even more duties and responsibilities will come.
For the people who want to become nurses, they need to know that they have to go to a nursing school where they will be taught all the basics about being a nurse and more: how to successfully take care of patients, help doctors, and everything related to health care such as what tools should be used, and when.
Besides medical facilities, nurses could also work in schools, which is a more pleasant environment. However, nurses have good working conditions, because the hospitals must always be kept very clean and organized, no matter what.
