A person that works in public relations is hired to share information concerning any aspect the company deems appropriate. The people working in the public relation field release public statements about any issue regarding the company they are working for, usually trying to put the company in a good light.

The statements are usually positive; however, there are times when public relation people also have to make negative statements that cannot be avoided. The way those statements are formulated matters a lot concerning the impact it will have on people. No mistakes are allowed; even if bad news is not what people want to hear, as long as a professional wrote them, they may make the client look better. If a sloppy job is done, it can have irreversible repercussions on the image of the company. The publicist is responsible and in charge of that.

Public relations write statements, implement strategies and plans on how to advertise a certain campaign for their client. Everything about the campaign has to fit the client's needs, their view, and the policies of their company. The campaign designed by the public relations person has to fit the company like a glove.

One of the publicist's duties and responsibilities is to create a connection between their client and media -TV, newspapers, etc. They have to establish a good business relationship with the media, and to ensure that their company looks good, at any costs. The programs implemented must be flawless and well thought.

A publicist must be a very self-confident person, with great communication abilities. They also must be confident when speaking in public -a publicist is the image of their client, and he will talk in their name whenever he has to. For this, they have to be able to keep a flawless appearance, and speech. For people who want to become publicists, speech training might be a good idea.

A publicist must be very friendly, and be able to do more things at the same time. They need to always try to make new connections with people that can help the development of their company.

As far as education goes, a person who wants to become a publicist has a great advantage if s/he has a journalism degree or anything in administration and communication. Because this is not a job reserved people can do, if you want to get hired as a publicist, you must be outspoken, you must pay great attention to details, and to the latest trends. Be them technology trends, news, or fashion, you have to always keep updated with everything. Of course, you should know how to use a computer.

The public relations person will be requested to take all kinds of training classes throughout his/her career, to ensure that he/she is up to date with everything. In public relations, education is not that important, but skills are. Your communication and management abilities will be tested at the interview - so make sure you are prepared for that. To work in public relations is not something easy and that everyone can do.
