There are several jobs provided in a restaurant starting from chefs, sommeliers, hosts, waiters and ending with dishwashers. Here are a few restaurant jobs descriptions.
Chef
A chef is an extremely skilled and creative cook who can make tasty meals and present them in an artistic manner. A restaurant chef is in charge of supervising the kitchen staff and guaranteeing that the environment conforms to the health standards. A chef is also responsible for hiring and training other cooks and sometimes she/he may even have to create his/her own menu with proper pricing and order for the supplies needed. The chef's job is considered the most advantageous job in a restaurant, but it can take a couple of years to become a known, successful chef.
Sommelier
Another job that is categorized as one of the best job in a restaurant is that of a sommelier. A sommelier is an expert in wine and his job is to pair wine with food. She/he has the duty to provide each customer with courtesy and service, despite the price level or beverage they choose. Generally, the job of a sommelier is easy because the professional is paid to taste fine wines. However, there are some complications that might appear such as demanding guests who are unclear about what they desire or the fact that the sommelier must provide top wines and drinks on a budget which is not facile; educating the waiting staff and guests can be hard sometimes as well.
Head Waitress
A head waitress' job requires physical and emotional skills because there are some demanding responsibilities to be taken care of. The head waitress has the duty to schedule reservations, arrange parties and handle other logistical issues. Also, she has to hire and train personnel and, in order to do a good job; she must have good communication skills. Her work demands constant physical movement, without any assurance of a moment to rest, and a good memory in order to ensure that the guests receive their exact order and that the staff is organized. A head waitress has to be prepared to solve difficult situations such as angry clients with complaints and she has to proceed with professionalism and friendliness. The head waitress is considered to be a restaurant's focal nervous system.
Dishwasher
Although the name of the job points only to a certain responsibility, dishwashers do more than that. Dishwashers are in charge of washing the dishes, drying them, providing supply for the kitchen's dishwasher and arranging the dishes and the cookware. Also, they are in charge of cleaning the ovens and fridges and sometimes, they even take care of miscellaneous duties such as cleaning floors and bathrooms or taking out the garbage. When the restaurant is shorthanded, dishwashers are put into service as waiters or bus boys and they also prepare food for cooks. Many people who worked as dishwashers, consider that this is the worst job in a restaurant.
