The truth is that working in such an environment is not very difficult, except for the standing part, as one has to stand most of the time, especially in a big clothing store with a lot of visitors per day. Maybe smaller shops will allow the sales assistant to sit if there is no client in the store.
What I personally like about the work in a store is that there is always something to do, there are always people coming in, giving you the possibility to learn something from them. Also, you get in contact with the fashion trends hence you can learn more about it. You can also learn more about people and their shopping habits, you will know only by the look on their face if they want to buy or not. Maybe it will not be true all the time, but at least 95% of your guesses will be right.
Another good bonus is the fact that the employees get some percent off if they choose to buy from the shop they work at, no matter the store's size. This is very important because there are shops that do not offer sales almost at all.
Thinking of the bonus percent these sales assistants get from reaching the sales target, it is really an "industry" to be considered for getting a job. Added to all these are the next two things: part timing and almost no experience required at hiring. An enthusiastic person, willing to learn new things and to do their job as good as possible, is much more appealing to the human resources (or the person hiring) than some experienced person that is going to work only to get the paycheck. The store managers are usually the ones conducting the interviews for the open spots, and also the ones to fire people. They also have been sales assistants and they got promoted because they did their job to the best of their abilities.
Maybe not all the shops have the same hierarchy, but it is always being done after two principles: whoever is doing their job best and sometimes whoever occupies this position for a longer period of time.
Part time job is very fit for those still occupied with their studies, of even for those in need of an extra income, usually done as a second job.
Working in such an environment is also good for future fashion designers, or seamstresses. These future professionals will have some experience on how the finished product will look like, on how to combine textures, fabrics, pieces of clothing; what could look good on different people depending on their body shape, and much more.
