There are always many things that the clients do not see. The sales assistants cannot possibly do all the work by themselves, with no help from the inside. There are many people that work in the back, in the big storage rooms, that help keep the business going. The people that work at the warehouse are usually providing the merchandise to the shop - they keep in contact with the providers and receive the products. First of all, the people that work in the warehouse are responsible with packing and unpacking the items.
When the new items arrive in the storage rooms, they have to unpack the merchandise, and to check the products. If some of the items are damaged, they are not sent to the shop, but returned to the suppliers. The items that are good for sale are sorted by name, type and by how popular they are. The food products will go in a separate place than the non-edible. The more popular items are going to be stored in a place which is easier to reach so as to provide better access, while the products that are less used will go in another bigger storage room.
The warehouse attendants have to calculate the profits of the shop - and decide whether the suppliers they are using need to be switched or not. Sometimes, when the profits are not as big as expected, the warehouse attendants can decide to cut down costs by using different suppliers, who will provide the same quality merchandise for lower costs. This can also happen in cases where, the shop the providers are dealing with sends too many broken or damaged items.
If the sales assistants need some items in order to complete their duties better, the warehouse supervisors will decide whether the request fits in the budget, and if it does, the request is fulfilled. If not, the shop's management is contacted further.
The warehouse attendants are the ones who add the price tags on the merchandise before carrying them into the shop, on display. In some of the retail shops, the sales attendants are the ones doing this job.
To work in a warehouse is considered risky sometimes. The people working in warehouses are prone to work related injuries, such as: muscle strains, bruises, hits, scratches. They need to be able to lift medium to heavy merchandise and boxes, and to carry them into the shop.
Some shops require some training for this - to ensure the worker's safety at work. People who want to work in warehouses need to be ready to handle a flexible schedule, but tiresome, nevertheless. They can be required at night, when the products arrive, and of course on weekends - there are many malls and shops that are open on Saturdays and also on Sundays.
As for studies, most of the times, a high school diploma is required - but not always. Some training courses are usually provided by the shop, under the supervision of the managers of the warehouse.
