Every one of us used to imagine all sorts of things when we were little regarding what we will be doing as grownups. But being a doctor, a scientist, a lawyer, a singer or an actress were just dreams. Life is hard enough to make us give up our hopes and great expectations. If truth is been told, I don't think that anyone working today as a welder used to dream about doing this job when being children. But things change and we change. In order to earn some money and to have food to feed our children we do a lot of things. And welding is one of them.
Welding and its surprises
Actually, people tend to think that welding is more than a craft, but an art. More and more people tend to embrace this job, both males and females. They seem to like it because it's dynamic, changing continuously and it comes with more and more challenges. And it's not as simple as it seems either. It requires some knowledge about scientific principles, being handy and hard working. You should know a lot of things, including the properties of every single material you have to work with and must have the ability of using specific blueprints and instructions. And just to give you an idea of how complex things can become, some of them need to use robots or computers in order to join the metal pieces. Because welding it's all about joining metals and the simpler it sounds, the more complicated it is in fact.
How to Become a Welder
You can make it with just a simple diploma of high school, or with some special courses in physics, math or mechanical drawing, or with some classes about electricity or welding. Computer skills are also very important to become a welder.
I should mention that there are two ways of doing this. The simple one, by learning in a few days how to weld metal with just a machine, and the harder one, that requires special techniques, hand labor and it takes a few years to master.
Manual dexterity, a good coordination between hand and eyes and a good eye sight are mandatory qualities.
Working Conditions
A welder can be asked to work in a wide range of conditions. They are given some protective equipment like clothes, helmets, goggles, protective lenses and other things to help them stay away from eye injuries and burns, which are the main perils when practicing this job. Also, it is mandatory that the place where the worker works at is properly ventilated because otherwise, one could be intoxicated with gases. They have to pay attention because they get in contact with paint, dust, grease or dirt and they also have to do some physical effort, especially those who work in constructions.
Skills
You must be very handy, ambitious, perseverant and hard working. You must be interested to learn, to constantly inform yourself about the latest discoveries in your field of activity. You must have a good eyesight and also to be in a good physical shape. You must have some physics knowledge and you also must have talent, if you want to be really good in what you do.
