Technical drawing is the pre-requisite in any manufacturing, engineering, and construction field. Without it, producing and constructing anything would be next to impossible. No matter how concrete ideas about a project organizations may have, but without converting them into sustainable plans, nothing can progress. The job to turn ideas into a concrete plan lies on a draftsman. These drafters have the primary responsibility of preparing technical design for which they first prepare a sketch work on a piece of paper, scan it, and them convert it into a digital file with the help of drafting software.
Drafting is a specialized skill used in several fields from engineering, manufacturing, construction, to architecture. A draftsman can work for preparing technical drawings of public projects such as highways, bridges, dams, or design plans for electronic wiring system, for aeronautics, and other fields. A civil drafter works with architects, and engineers for creating technical drawings of a structure as per the provided specifications and calculations. So based on the fields and specializations, there are several job opportunities from civil drafting, to mechanical drafting, electrical drafting, architectural drafting, or aeronautical drafting.
To work as a drafter, an associate degree in drafting is compulsory. Many technical and community colleges offer courses on drafting where students learn to sketch, design, and use computer drafting software. Drafting is a demanding field and hence organizations ask for certification from the American Design Drafting Association (ADDA). Along with the certification, a draftsman needs strong drawing skills, artistic abilities, and ability to calculate numbers.
