Construction management work refers to the supervision and management of a construction project. Knowledge - Candidates planning to work as a construction manager must have competence in architecture and structural engineering, construction laws, safety protocols, accountancy, inventory management, time management, and quality inspections.
Skills - The key skills required for candidates are interpersonal skills, ability to take up responsibilities, strong decision making capacities, emphasis on safety measures, competent in tracking expenses and inventory, and project management abilities.
Work Environment
Work Place - A construction manager looks after the project in totality. Hence, he makes his presence for both, on field and off field activities. At times he works from office and handles the administrative and clerical duties. On other occasions, they work on site and monitor actual execution of work. Travelling is common in this job profile. At times, they travel between two cities or countries.
Work Timings - The manager works for 40 hours per week. However, he must be available 24 hours. He needs to report in office or on site during emergencies and inspections. Some candidates work during night shifts if the projects demand.
Health Hazards - A manager's job is subject to physical and mental strains. Constant travels, high noise levels on site, intense coordination are some reasons that add to work pressures. Often managers stay away from families and thus can feel homesick.
Work Risks - A typical construction site has the potential to cause injuries. Hence, managers too are vulnerable to accidents. Managers must maintain caution from building activities and adopt all safety measures.

Construction managers have two alternatives to work. They can work independently and handle projects. Otherwise, they can work for construction organizations as full term job.
