Computer Technician Work


Computer technician work refers to the installation, configuration and maintenance of the computer systems and networks as per the end users requirements. They perform several functions required to provide the organization a strong technical set up. They identify the user requirements and determine the technology required to meet those demands. Further, they install and configure the relevant systems, and update them from time to time. Also, they are responsible to provide solutions to manage breakdowns and defects. Hence, the computer technicians perform varied functions of installation, configuration, maintenance, error diagnosis and troubleshooting of the systems.

Job Scope

There are several types of computer technicians. Smaller organizations hire only one person to perform all tasks, whereas other organizations those who operate on large scale hire multiple specialists to manage the computer systems. The different computer technician work profiles are:

Systems Administrator: They ensure smooth functioning of the entire system. It includes working of the computers, peripherals, networks, software and hardware. They provide solutions to the problems faced by the end user and suggest updates from time to time to keep the systems suitable to the requirements.

Database Administrator: They handle the database management. They develop ways to store, organize, analyze and present organizational data. They identify the requirements of the organization, modify the systems and troubleshoot the errors as and when they occur. Also they ensure suitable security code for the databases.

Network Architect: They are responsible to set up, configure, and maintain the different computer networks. It includes LANs, WANs, Internet, Intranet, and data communication systems. They set up several hardware components of routers, hubs, adapters or cables as part of network setup.

Security Specialists: They ensure security to systems and databases from hacking and tampering. They provide the systems with security codes and antivirus systems to ensure data remains safe from virus or malware, security breaches, cyber-attacks, etc. At times, they help to identify the intruder as well, in event of cyber-attacks.

Help Desk Technician: This is an entry level position. The technician performs responsibilities similar to a customer care executive. They receive calls from end users who are facing technical problems, identify the nature of errors and provide them with troubleshooting solutions over the phone.
