All tasks related to the installation, repairing and maintenance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning is collectively known as HVAC work. A person working in this field is expected to possess good problem solving skills and should be skilled at working with the various equipments that they come across. They should also possess good communication skills as they have to convey their observations and possible action plans to the clients. HVAC technicians should be in a good physical condition as the job may involve lifting heavy equipment and is physically taxing in nature.
Working Conditions
As this is a technical field, HVAC work mainly consists of on-site and outdoor work. This line of work can be physically demanding as it involves long hours of standing and working in extreme hot or cold conditions while repairing air conditioning and heating systems, respectively. Other possible health risks include electrical shocks, joint pains and burns while conducting this type of work. They work for 40 hours or above in a week and may occasionally work overtime when there is a lot of work load.

Most HVAC technicians work as independent workers who may work on a contractual basis for organizations. Some of them also work full time with large companies who may need regular maintenance for a number of HVAC systems installed in various plants and branches. Their wages are calculated on an hourly basis and on an average, an HVAC technician may earn anywhere between $15 to $30 an hour depending on their skill level and experience in the field.
