Challenges in Aerospace and Defense Field

In terms of global relations, the defense industry has been affected by huge mergers as well as other crucial issues. The defense industry proposed deals worth about $31 billion in 2007. It includes GE's $4.8 billion acquisition of Smiths Aerospace.

In the last 2008 presidential election, industry experts waited to observe its impact on the aerospace industry. Some people felt that the democratic form of government was not beneficial for the industry, while others thought that despite the outcome of the elections, the industry will grow consistently till 2010. After that funding in war-related expenditures will be transferred to Homeland Security. It is also believed that industry consolidation will progress faster.

Apart from acquiring funds and expenditure, the defense industry had to deal with changing war methods in the last few years. It is impossible to fight and win contemporary battles on a conventional battlefield against a professional army. Changing war methods is also important in order to deal with the excruciating and prolonged clash going on in Iraq and Afghanistan. It means that huge tanks will be replaced by smaller, faster and lighter equipments.

Automation is also a rising development in the defense field. Unlike a human being, machines never eat or sleep. They operate continuously and are easily replaced and repaired, in case of damage.

An equipment known as the Micro Air Vehicle produced by Honeywell was sent to Iraq in 2007. This equipment is the size of a breadbox which helps soldiers' to identify and defuse bombs.

Also to prevent smuggling and illegal immigration, towers are constructed which are equipped with radar, cameras, loudspeakers and data links. These towers are high enough, and permits the warden to keep a watch on the movements of people across the border for several miles. It is a challenge to invent new equipments which are easy to handle and more functional.
