Civil engineers are responsible with planning and designing all sorts of highways, bridges, tunnels, sewage or water systems, buildings and warehouses. They can also be contracted in order to fully supervise the work done so as to make sure that the plans are entirely respected. Whether they decide to activate independently and specialize themselves in offering consultancy or whether they prefer to collaborate with some public companies in the iron and steel industry.
Role
The main role of an engineer when analyzing a construction plan is to make sure that the whole work will be efficiently made, so that the one who ordered it and who pays do not make unnecessary investments. They have to also assure the safety of the structures because any new building comes with risks for those that surround it and for the people who will use it. The larger the building, the more responsible should the engineers be for its maintenance and security.
Educational requirements
In order to become a civil engineer one should get at least a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. It wouldn't hurt for those interested to start the preparations from college by attending special courses of structural design, thermodynamics, circuitry or fluid mechanics. If you are lucky enough you could find a college to allow you to gather both knowledge and practical experience.
After a specific time of supervised activity you could consider getting your license. This license will allow you to activate as an independent civil engineer. But in this field too you will have to learn new things and to improve your knowledge throughout your entire career.
Working Environment
Working conditions are generally harsh for most civil engineers. If it's research, you can start dreaming of a laboratory. But if it refers to supervising, get yourself ready to go on the site among all the dust. But if you have the ability of working in team, if you are well organized, hard working, you can accurately make assumptions regarding the building costs.
