They represent the company's image and so they have to promote professionalism. You don't need extensive marketing knowledge in order to work as a public relation specialist, the kind of knowledge that a marketing researcher needs for example, but you have to be able to interrelate with all the public voices at a level that enforces the image of the brand or product.
