If you have always liked cooking and you think that you are actually good at it, then you could consider the option of getting a job in a restaurant. But, things are not so simple, as the options are multiple, depending on your exact skills and experience. Let us view some of the job possibilities one might have in a restaurant.
Chef
If you think that your cooking is great and has been appreciated many times before, then you might want to follow the necessary preparation courses and get a job as a chef. Your major responsibility will be that of supervising all the processing of the food in the restaurant.
The slicing, seasoning and cooking have to be done under your critical eye. As a chef you have to do a quality check of the food items, in order to make sure that it is in a perfect state and that it has not been altered in any way by the transportation and storage conditions. You also have to interact with the costumers and make sure that the feed-back is a positive and that they are fully satisfied with what they have been offered.
It is also the chef's duty to keep a permanent track of what has been consumed and what is needed, and to order all the necessary supplies. He should be very rigorous in calculating the quantities of the ingredients to be used, as the number of portions will depend on that. In his records, he also has to have a clear list of the food and beverage costs, so that he could report them to his superiors or to the restaurant's administrator at any time.
Then, if new cooking devices appear in the market, it will be the chef who does all the necessary steps towards their purchase. That means that he will keep himself permanently informed about the latest discoveries and inventions in the field.
An important duty of the chef is, besides the actual cooking, that of keeping the cleanliness of the kitchen, so that all the food could be cooked in conditions of extreme hygiene. A chef's salary will be around 75,000 U.S. dollars a year, that, of course, depending very much on the person's experience and qualities.
Waiter/ Waitress
If you do not have very developed cooking skills, but you are very good with people, then you can decide on being a waiter or a waitress. A waiter is usually that person who comes to your table, takes your order and brings it to you when it is ready. He/she is also the one who brings the final calculation of how much you have to pay for your meal.
The waiter has to be a pleasant and calm person, with good communication skills and a very good memory, so that s/he would not have problems with the orders when the restaurant is really crowded. A waiter usually gets about 71,000 dollars a year.
All in all, we see that working in the food services area is not an easy thing, but it is nice for you to work in a pleasant, nice-smelling environment, in conditions of perfect hygiene.
