CNC Work
CNC is an acronym for Computer Numeric Control Machine. It is a machine regulated by a computer and used for the purpose of cutting, grinding and shaping. These automated machines help to cut the raw materials in precise size and shape without processing the work manually. Hence, to operate and program these machines, it is necessary to appoint CNC experts. Here is a list of the profiles that form a part of the CNC work.
Work Nature
CNC work is mostly manual work. It primarily includes operations, repairs and maintenance functions. In few profiles, supervision and analysis are main job roles. The candidate is expected to meet the planned work standards. The programmer's profile involves observation, analysis and calculations. Also, it is less manual and more intellectual. CNC work nature differs with the role of that job position.
Job Scope
CNC work includes several profiles. We have listed a few for your reference.
- CNC Programmer - They create a set of instructions in computer aided and automated manufacturing program. These instructions determine where to cut, how to cut and the exact shape and size of the cut pieces. He analyzes the drawings and the blueprints, performs calculations, chooses the cutting tools and configures the settings as per the requirements. They ensure the machine works as per the desired standards.
- CNC Setter: They are responsible to ensure the machinery is ready for operations and equipped with the cutting tools. They install the machinery and ensure the accurate positioning of the cutting and shaping tools to give the desired form to the raw materials. They perform repairs and replace the obsolete parts with new ones. They inspect the machine and hand it over to the operator.
- CNC Operator: Once the programming is done, the operator looks after the actual operations. They deliver the instructions to the control modules. They place the raw material within the machine and ensure it gets cut at right places. They provide manual supervision to the machine operations and ensure consistency with the expected results. Occasionally, they perform repairing and maintenance functions.
- CNC Machinist: The machinist is responsible to supervise the functioning of the machinery and ensure the manufactured parts meet the standard requirements. They make certain the first part is consistent with the blueprint and the successive parts meet the specifications of the first. They may order a change in code in case of the inconsistencies.
Work Environment
CNC machines are placed in typical manufacturing set ups. Hence all CNC machine experts are subject to stressful and hazardous conditions. The typical features of work environment of CNC work experts are:
- Work Place: CNC workers work in manufacturing units and assembly centers. They are not required to work in offices or travel anywhere.
- Work Timings: On most occasions, 40 hours of work is sufficient. However, they may put in additional hours every day or on weekends, if required.
- Work Hazards: The workers face hazardous conditions and are prone to suffer harm from loud noise, dust, debris, toxics and sharp tools. Working in manufacturing units is mentally and physically stressful. They must wear safety gears and follow safety measures to prevent injuries.
Career Prospects
- Career Prospects for CNC work technicians, who boast strong technical competence, look promising. They must possess the capacity to learn and implement the latest introductions quickly.
- Automation being the new mantra in manufacturing units, there is good possibility that manual work gets completely replaced with machines. This may reduce the job opportunities for operators and machinists.
- Another possibility is that diversification in work is not required and one person is sufficient to perform all functions of operating the CNC machine. This can further curtail the job prospects and demand multitasking from the technicians.
We hope you find the CNC work details useful in your career search. These details will help you realize the future potential of a career in CNC work.
